The change comes from <strong>EU Regulation 2023\/1464<\/strong>, which amends Annex XVII of the REACH Regulation by introducing the new Entry 77, dedicated to formaldehyde and formaldehyde-releasing substances.<br \/>\n<br \/>This is an important change for the wood, furniture and construction industries, as well as for designers, architects and companies that use panels in their products. The direction set by the regulation is clear: increasing attention must be paid not only to the technical performance of materials, but also to their contribution <strong>to indoor air quality<\/strong>.[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row row_height_percent=&#8221;0&#8243; override_padding=&#8221;yes&#8221; h_padding=&#8221;3&#8243; top_padding=&#8221;2&#8243; bottom_padding=&#8221;2&#8243; overlay_alpha=&#8221;50&#8243; gutter_size=&#8221;3&#8243; column_width_percent=&#8221;100&#8243; shift_y=&#8221;0&#8243; z_index=&#8221;0&#8243; content_parallax=&#8221;0&#8243; uncode_shortcode_id=&#8221;956636&#8243;][vc_column width=&#8221;1\/1&#8243;][vc_column_text uncode_shortcode_id=&#8221;453723&#8243;]<\/p>\n<h2>What is the new formaldehyde limit from 6 August 2026?<\/h2>\n<p>EU Regulation 2023\/1464 establishes that, after 6 August 2026, articles that exceed specific levels of released formaldehyde under the test conditions defined by the regulation may no longer be placed on the market.<\/p>\n<p>In particular, the limit is set at:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>0.062 mg\/m\u00b3 for furniture and wood-based articles;<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>0.080 mg\/m\u00b3 for other articles<\/strong> <strong>covered by the restriction.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>For the wood-based panel industry, the first value is therefore particularly relevant. It is important to underline that the regulation refers to the concentration of formaldehyde released into the air under specific testing conditions. It is therefore not simply a matter of the amount of formaldehyde contained in an individual material, but of the emissions measured according to the criteria defined by the new European rules. In the case of complex products, moreover, the limit is assessed by considering the product as a whole.<\/p>\n<h3>Why has the European Union introduced new limits?<\/h3>\n<p>We spend a significant part of our time inside homes, offices, schools, hospitality facilities, means of transport and other enclosed environments. Materials, furniture and components used in these spaces can contribute to the quality of the air we breathe. The new European restriction has therefore been introduced with the aim of reducing people\u2019s exposure to formaldehyde in indoor environments, by establishing common criteria across Europe and harmonised testing conditions.<\/p>\n<p>For those who design spaces, the choice of materials therefore becomes even more important. These include, for example, furniture, interior design, fit-outs, construction and many other applications in which panels and components are used within spaces occupied by people. For manufacturers and designers, it therefore becomes increasingly important to understand the emission characteristics of the materials used and verify their suitability for the intended application.<\/p>\n<p>In this context, <strong>low-emission panels<\/strong> and <strong>NAF \u2013 No Added Formaldehyde<\/strong> solutions, manufactured without added formaldehyde in the bonding system, become particularly relevant. This is not only about complying with a new regulatory requirement. In this case, the deadline is later: <strong>from 6 August 2027<\/strong>, road vehicles in which the formaldehyde concentration inside the vehicle exceeds <strong>0.062 mg\/m\u00b3<\/strong> under the test conditions established by the regulation may no longer be placed on the market. This issue is particularly relevant for the <strong>camper and caravan sector<\/strong>, where indoor spaces are compact and contain numerous elements made from panels, coverings, furniture and components.<\/p>\n<p>The choice of materials used for walls, furniture, storage units and other interior elements therefore becomes part of a design approach that must combine <strong>lightness<\/strong>, <strong>performance<\/strong> and <strong>air quality<\/strong>. This research led to the development of <a href=\"https:\/\/invernizzi-spa.com\/en\/product\/naf-comfortply-plywood\/\"><strong>NAF Comfortply<\/strong><\/a>, a poplar plywood panel manufactured with a no-added-formaldehyde bonding system with <strong>formaldehyde emissions of just 0.01 mg\/m\u00b3<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>With <strong>NAF Comfortply<\/strong> formaldehyde emissions are reduced to almost zero, helping to support indoor air quality.
